In our poll on Wednesday, we asked Liverpool fans who they thought their best signing of the season was – and with centre-back Virgil Van Dijk costing a massive £70m from Southampton in January and ex-Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain arriving at Anfield for £34m in the summer – you would have thought this would have been a two-horse race.
Reds fans surprisingly ignored both of these signings, opting instead for left-back Andrew Robertson, who joined from Hull City for a mere £8m and is still only rated at £9m, according to Transfermarket.
Despite his cost, Robertson has been a mainstay at the left-side of Liverpool’s defence this season having been Jurgen Klopp’s go-to man in that area since the beginning of December.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, meanwhile, has managed to find the back of the net three times this season but, like Van Dijk, will be struggling to shake-off the high expectations attached to his lofty transfer fee.
It is easy therefore to see why Liverpool fans are so impressed by the consistent yet affordably-priced Scottish fullback in their ranks.
