As reported by The Daily Record, Rangers’ hopes of landing Ghanaian defender Rashid Sumaila have taken a significant blow.
What’s the story?
The Daily Mail had reported last week Pedro Caixinha was hoping to make the centre-back one of his first summer signings, on a free transfer, but the move has hit a serious snag after it was revealed his contract still has years to run at his current club.
The Record say Sumaila’s deal at Qadsia SC actually runs out in 2020, with the player signing a new long-term contract before he left for loan club Al-Gharafa, which is where Pedro Caixinha utilised him.
As quoted by The Daily Record, Qadsia stated:
“Prior to Rashid Sumalia joining Al-Gharafa on loan, he extended his contract until the year 2020. So far we have had no request from Al-Gharafa to take him back on loan again. We allowed the player to go on loan to Qatar to help with his development and he is an important player for us in our future plans.”
It’s another blow for the Light Blues after another reported target, Will Vaulks, ruled out a move to Ibrox last week.
Sumaila appeared to fit the profile for the Light Blues, they will need defensive reinforcements and that player was a former favourite of Caixinha at Al-Gharafa.
The Rangers manager has a difficult job in the coming weeks and months as he attempts to build a team capable of great things in the Scottish Premiership on a limited budget.
According to Transfermarkt, Rashid Sumaila is valued at around £1.25m and with resources stretched, the Ibrox boss has to decide which areas of the team should be focused on.
It seems, at least in this case, that sort of fee is just asking too much.
