Amidst injuries to the likes of Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay in recent weeks and months, it has been little surprise to see Ole Gunnar Solskjaer come out and admit that Manchester United are on the look-out for midfield reinforcements.

Such is the sparsity of options available to him at the moment, only Nemanja Matic and Fred are his two senior options to play in that deeper-lying role. Andreas Pereira was tried out in that position against Wolves in the third round of the FA Cup on late Saturday afternoon, and it’s fair to say it didn’t work out that well.
Quickfire Quiz: How much do you know about Man Utd’s history in the January transfer window?
But according to Goal, that game could have seen a potential United midfielder take to the field. Ruben Neves is said to be of major interest to the Red Devils, and that the Manchester side have already opened up talks for the Portugal international over a possible January move. And after hearing their interest in the central midfielder, fans took to Twitter to voice their thoughts on their supposed transfer target.
A couple of fans discussed the possible arrival of Neves in context of their own squad, with one supporter suggesting he is an “instant upgrade of Matic”, whilst another insisted he is “exactly what we need”.
A few fans however admitted that whilst it would be great news for them if they could sign Neves, they could not see it happening and that is “too good to be true”.
Having now had more than a season-and-a-half of Premier League football to his name, Neves has shown why he can be regarded as one of the finest central midfielders in the division. His wonder strikes against United alone at Molineux whenever the two sides have played against each other is testament to that.
As per Whoscored, his career average of 51.6 passes per game at an accuracy of 80.8% is exactly the kind of play-maker United could do with. It is little surprise to see fans of the Manchester side become so enamoured with the idea of him strutting his stuff at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s praise of this fringe man is ominous for one of Manchester United’s key stars.
