Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has suggested that the club did not bring in a direct replacement for Philippe Coutinho in January because it would have cost “crazy money”.The Merseyside outfit worked hard to keep the Brazilian in the summer by rejecting numerous offers from Barcelona. However, Coutinho’s desire to leave for the Camp Nou eventually forced the Reds to reluctantly sell in the middle of the season.Widespread reports, including one fromÂThe Guardian, claimed that the Merseyside outfit pocketed around £142m for the playmaker’s signature.Plenty of Liverpool fans were keen for the club to use that sum to bring in a replacement before the end of the January transfer window. The Reds did splash £75m on defender Virgil van Dijk (before Coutinho’s departure) but there were no other incomings by the deadline.According toÂESPN, when asked about Liverpool’s lack of a replacement, the German manager said:
“Yes, we could have done something. But we need really the right thing. The right thing now, you don’t get. The 100 percent right thing, only for completely crazy money that really makes no sense. I’m not even sure that would work. And in the summer it looks different.”
Judging by the fans’ responses, they are not best pleased with Klopp’s reasoning.
